Skills that every Business Analyst must have

To become a successful Business Analyst, you need to develop some important skills.Only knowing BA responsibilities isn’t enough, you will also need to learn the skills that every business analyst must-have. In this blog, we will tell you about the most important ones, which actually are the skills that most companies are expecting BA’s to have when they hire them.

1) Communication skills:

As a business analyst, you are a good communicator, regardless of the method of communication, communication skills should be good because the way you gather the requirement and express your opinion is your biggest strength as a business analyst. You must be able to make your point unambiguously and clearly. It is also most important that you know how to ask insightful questions to retrieve the information that you need from stakeholders. In order to improve this skill, you’ll need to work on oral and written communication separately.

Oral communication

  • Try to be as clear as possible. This means that sometimes you might have to repeat things, but when you do, try to express yourself differently each time.
  • Speak slowly and pay focus on your ListItemstener’s body language. That will give you the chance to reaListItemze if they are actually following your explanation or not.
  • Precision when it comes to expressing ideas. In the traditional or the agile software development ListItemfe cycle, the business analyst role is not ListItemmited to talking with stakeholders. It is their responsibiListItemty to give support to programmers, testers, UI and UX areas and any other role that may need to understand what the stakeholder needs are.

Written communication

  • Read more that will help you to improve your writing. Seeing how other people make the same documents (only for the reference) you need to create can be a great help. Don’t forget that both the font style and font size of your writinghave an important impact on their own. Mind your punctuation and never consider a document as completed before having given it a final check. After the final check send it to the other end (stakeholder) for conformation.
  • The following points should be considered while making the document :
       –  The clarity to get your ideas.
       –  Precision to avoid ambiguities.
       –  No GrammaticalMistakes.
       –  Punctuation used to properly

2) Understanding of the Tools:

Every project is different, even though most of the time you will use diagrams, the type may vary depending on the project. What is certain is that you will be required to be as clear as possible, and the use cases, user stories, UML notation, and mock-ups are going to be your allies in reaching this clarity.

So, every Business Analyst should be good at using network diagrams tools, workflow diagrams tools, business process management tools, etc. This is because we are still dealing with a requirement and should be able to slice and dice the requirement using these tools for documentation. It’s not so important to learn coding and programming through a basic understanding might be of advantage like SQL, Python, etc.

3) Relationship Management:

This ability is about engaging with your team members and clients through the building of meaningful and trustworthy relationships. The emotions and expressing empathy are a great help to improve your relationship with other stakeholders.

– Emotion Management

Emotion management takes up an important aspect, the way we interact with others. It’s basically the way we control our reactions when we feel attracted by someone else. The empathy that can considerably help you to improve the way you deal in different situations.

– Don’t Judge People

This is one of the most important point when it comes to connecting with another human being. Putting ourselves in other people’s shoes is the best way to understand what they feel and why they act in the way they do, in other words, so as to understand or empathize with their opinion, perspective, or point of view. Before being quick to judge someone for their actions, you should always try to put yourself in that situation.

Putting your empathy in practice means basically, imagining what you would feel if you had to make the same decisions as to the person you are trying to empathize with.

4) Be A Good Listener:

To get perspective of your clients or your own team correctly you should be a good listener because every question, input or suggestion is important, by being a good listener you are not making your life easy of others too.

While gathering the requirements from the stakeholders, it is very important for you to listen to every stakeholder carefully & passionately before putting your point forward.

5) Analytical Skill:

The creativity must occur. To analyze is the act of processing the stakeholder requirements that you previously gathered and creating the best solution to solve the given problem.

Brainstorming the requirement, when you need isolated and think out-of-the-box ideas.

The analytical capacity is what allows the business analyst to turn the gathered requirements into a solution design as per the requirements. g and programming through a basic understanding might be of advantage like SQL, Python, etc.

6) Domain knowledge:

A Domain is a specific area of work like banking, Insurance, healthcare, infrastructure, etc. and every project belongs to a specific domain. A business analyst must have a fair knowledge of the domain he is working in. As it will help him to better understand the business case of the project, its background and it helps to solve the domain-specific complexity.

Enhancing the above skills you should get the international Business analyst IIBA certification which will help you, so there are different types of certification ECBA, CCBA, and CBAP. If you don’t have any experience then ECBA Business analyst certification is the best option for you, who have 2 to 3 years of BA experience then CCBA certification is for you or those BA professionals who have more than 5 years of BA experience go for CBAP certification.
